Happy President’s Day! Today, you can teach your kids about coins, heads and tails, and do some fun learning activities.
Learning Activities with Coins
Science
Wash coins in water with vinegar and baking soda. Use an old toothbrush or a q-tip to scrub the coins clean.
History
Learn who is on each coin: Abraham Lincoln = penny, Thomas Jefferson = nickel, FDR = dime, George Washington = quarter.
Art
Make crayon rubbings of your coins.
Start a penny collection jar or a quarter collection from each state.
Make your own coins with shrinky-dinks. Draw your own head on the coin.
Math
Make your own “Penny Store” where everything is one penny. Ideas: bookstore, toy store, stuffed animal store. Practice counting and adding pennies. (Older kids can charge more than a penny.)
Make a coin creature to add up.
Throw out a handfull of coins. Have your kids find ____ cents. (photos on How Does She)
Print and do Kai-lan’s coin counting activities.
Play a fun money game like Loose Change or Cha-Ching.
What do you think? Are your kids ready to learn about money?
